Wrexham’s newest state-of-the-art 3G all weather sports pitch was officially opened last week.

The pitch, at Morgan Llwyd Activity Centre, was the third in the county borough to undergo a refurbishment – with facilities at Queensway Stadium and Chirk Leisure and Activity Centre also seeing the installation of new 3G pitches.

It was formally opened last week by Freedom Leisure, who operate the centre on behalf of Wrexham Council and the Racecourse Community Foundation – Wrexham AFC girls team, who were on hand to try the pitch out.

Work on the site was funded as part of a Welsh Government Sports Facilities Capital Loan, along with support from Wrexham Council and Freedom Leisure. Overall a total of £300,000 has been invested into upgrading pitch facilities at the three sites.

Andy Harris, Freedom Leisure Area Manager, says: “This refurbishment has been undertaken as part of a larger capital works project which is currently being progressed across the Borough as part of the Leisure Management Contract held between WCBC and Freedom Leisure. These refurbishments also include upgrades to fitness facilities at four centres.

“We are delighted that the Wrexham County Borough Council bid for the funding from the Welsh Government, has led to some phenomenal improvements to the centres across Wrexham.”

Gemma Owen, Head of Girls Football said: “The Racecourse Community Foundation at Wrexham Football Club have three weekly sessions with more than 100 girls attending and we are all very excited to be trialling the new pitch on opening day.

“For the girls we run U12 U14 and U16 sessions and all three age groups enter their first league season in September playing in the North Wales Girls League after only forming in August 2016.”

Cllr Paul Rogers, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, concludes: “I’m very pleased to see this facility officially opened, and I’m certain the neighbouring community will start to make good use of the Morgan Llwyd pitch very soon.

“Similar sites at Chirk and Queensway have already proven very popular, especially with youth sides. So I’m especially glad that Wrexham AFC Girls will be playing the inaugural match at this new 3G pitch.”

Training sessions for the Racecourse Community Foundation – Wrexham AFC girls team will be held at Morgan Llwyd on Tuesdays 5pm-6.45pm.
