Last weekend 20 pupils from Theatretrain in Wrexham travelled to London to perform alongside 3500 other Theatretrain pupils from around the UK.

On Sunday 14 July, the group performed in front of 9000 audience members at the 02 Arena in a production that was staged for the groups 20th birthday.

The production, named “20@O2” highlighted Theatretrain’s Greatest Hits where children from all over the UK performed songs like “Rolling In The Deep”, “I Predict A Riot” and “Black or White”.

Alongside this the pupils from Wrexham also took centre stage to perform their own version of “O Fortuna”.
The show opened with birthday messages from ex Theatretrain members Catherine Tate and Antony Costa from Blue which caused great excitement from the 3500 performers.

The children, all dressed head-to-toe in black then ripped off their black sheets to reveal a sea of bright colour and performed both in the choir and in drama scenes.

Two local students also sang solos. Ellison Roberts lead the company in “Do You Hear The People Sing” from Les Miserables and Abigail Sherratt sang the lead in a medley from the rock musical ‘Tommy’.

Artistic Director for the schools in Chester, Wrexham and Mold, Steve Davies said: “I am so proud of our pupils. The O2 is a massive venue to fill, but their passion and excitement for the work filled the arena.

“This is a day that they will remember for the rest of their lives

“We’ve received wonderful feedback from parents following the show. Everyone has said how thrilled they were to have been part of this experience.”

Theatretrain is a weekend theatre school for children aged 6-18 and meets locally every Saturday morning at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd in Wrexham as well as in Mold and Chester on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Each week children enjoy classes in singing, dancing and acting and work towards regular productions.

Theatretrain pride themselves on being ‘the company that loves to perform’ and they can regularly be seen in local venues in Wrexham and Chester as well as The Palace Theatre in Manchester and even London’s Royal Albert
Hall.

One parent said “My daughter joined Theatretrain when the school first opened as a very shy 6 year old, but is now full of confidence and singing a solo in The O2. It’s just fantastic.

“Although the weekend classes have broken up for the summer, there are still Summer schools taking place in Chester and registrations are also being taken for the new term. Visit www.chestersummerschool.co.uk or contact Steve on 01978 311446 or [email protected] for more information.
