The RSPCA is appealing for information after a swan died after being shot by a pellet gun in Wrexham.

The RSPCA was contacted by a member of the public who was concerned about the welfare of a swan at Stryt Las in Johnstown, Wrexham.

RSPCA officers attended the location several times to monitor the swan which appeared to be behaving normally.

However, following further visits the swan appeared to be deteriorating and officers carried out a boat rescue in order to catch the bird.

RSPCA inspector Kia Thomas said: “We have been monitoring the swan for a few weeks and we were not aware she had been shot.

“The swan deteriorated and we had to use a boat to rescue her. At that time it wasn’t clear what the problem was so she was taken to RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre where a pellet was found in the wing.”

The swan was undergoing treatment but sadly died on Tuesday night.

Inspector Thomas said she is appealing for information.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have seen the shooting in the area within the past month,” she said.

“The swan was part of a pair which usually breed at the site and are very popular with the visitors. She had not yet laid eggs this year.”

It is an offence to injure or kill a wild bird under the Wildlife and Countryside Act except under licence and offenders can face a fine of up to £5,000 and/or six months imprisonment.

If you spot an animal in distress, please call the RSPCA’s 24-hour helpline on 0300 1234 999.
