Wrexham’s Food Bank has received two trolley loads of food thanks to the opening of a new supermarket.

To celebrate the opening of Aldi’s new store on Ruthin Road, the supermarket invited Wrex the Dragon, Wrexham AFC’s mascot and Micah Ellinson, an eight year old Wrexham Food Bank supporter, to compete in a head-to-head trolley dash.

Both Wrex and Micah had 90 seconds to fill their trolley with as many items as possible and, despite a strong performance from Wrex with 40 items collected, Micah (with help from his dad John) came out on top with 58.

The two trolley loads of food were then donated to the Wrexham Food Bank.

Bryn Richards, property director for Aldi, said: “As Aldi are sponsors of Wrexham AFC under-15s we asked them to help us celebrate our newly built store in Wrexham, following more than £5 million of investment and the creation of 50 new jobs. The trolley dash was a great way to do just that.

“Today we all had a lot of fun but, most importantly, we have been able to help vulnerable families in Wrexham get access to the healthy, nutritious food that they need.”

These thoughts were echoed by Sally Ellinson, project manager of Wrexham Food Bank, who said: “To get such a large donation will really help us, and the people of Wrexham. To see a big company like Aldi still taking the time to support the local community is excellent.”

The new Aldi store on Ruthin Road opens on Thursday 26 January.
