Earlier this week Yale College held a mock election aimed at increasing awareness in procedures, as well as the importance of casting an informed vote.

Due to take place in 2016, the Welsh Government elections were used as the basis for the vote. Prior to casting the votes, students engaged in their own individual research in addition to holding a lively debate to consider key issues.

When they took to the makeshift polling station they were greeted with actual Polling Booths, ballot papers and a Returning Officer, simulating the real-life situation they would be greeted with.

Julie Strong, Historical & Contextual Studies Co-ordinator, was pleased with the results:-

“Analysing party policies enabled the students to cast more informed votes. Their research highlights how important it is for them to have informed views and cast their votes in elections.”

Earlier this year the group visited The Senedd in Cardiff and have since built on their experience through researching Welsh government processes as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate.
