A group of student nurses are to take on a 13 mile walk between Wrexham and Chester for charity.

Fern Williams, who studies nursing in Wrexham, organised the walk in memory of her sister-in-law, Charlene Phillips, who sadly passed away last year at the age of 29 after suffering from kidney disease.

On Saturday May 13th Fern and five of her university peers will take on the 13.4 mile walk between their University Campus in Wrexham to Chester Football Club to raise vital funds for British Kidney Patient Association (BKPA).

The charity, which aims to improve the lives of patients who undergo kidney treatment by offering support and contact.

Charlene, who was diagnosed with renal failure when she was 10 years old, underwent 200 operations and had regular dialysis three times a week at Arrowe Park Hospital.

She also received two kidney transplants during her lifetime, both of which failed for different reasons. Although she was added to the list for a third transplant, she sadly not not manage to receive it.

In October 2016 Charlene had a routine operation to monitor a hero graft (artificial access vain). Sadly she did not wake up from the anaesthetic as she suffered a stroke, putting her on life support at Arrowe Park hospital for nine days before she sadly passed away aged 29.

To give something back to the charity which has provided so much support to Charlene’s loved ones, Fern and her friends hope to raise £750 when they take on the 13.4 mile walk over the weekend.

The walk will take them through the Wrexham to Chester bus route – via Gresford, Rossett, Pulford, Marford, the Posthouse Roundabout and the Chester Business Park.

Fern said the BKPA charity has ‘helped us all us all so much as a family during her fight with kidney disease. Even after Charlene’s death they have supported us hugely’.

She added: “We would appreciate any donations to help us raise money for this wonderful charity. Your donation would be used by the BKPA so they can continue to help families like us on a daily basis.”

You can support the group by making a donation via JustGiving. Also people are welcome to cheer the group on / give them drinks of during their walk on Saturday!
