Wrexham Council members will be asked at this month’s Executive Board meeting to recommend plans for a new reuse shop at one of the Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centre’s.

FCC Environment (the Council’s Eco Park Contractors) wants to open the proposed shop at Bryn Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre.

If approved shoppers and local residents in Wrexham would benefit from a new charity reuse shop run by Nightingale House Hospice. Collection of goods would take place at the Council’s three Household Waste Recycling Centre’s in Brymbo, Bryn Lane and Plas Madoc.

A proportion of the profits generated would be used by Nightingale House Hospice to fund their charitable activities throughout the county. FCC Environment recommended choosing Nightingale being the ideal charity of choice due to its reputation as a 3 sector operator and the direct involvement the charity has had in providing care and support to Wrexham residents.

Nightingale House would be contracted to receive 35% of all net profits earned from the sales of this proposed reuse shop while Wrexham County Borough Council and FCC Environment would divide remaining profits 50/50.

This proposed reuse shop would also assist Wrexham Council in meeting its own recycling targets of 70% recycled waste by 2025 as reuse shops have proven incredibly successful in helping reduce the carbon impact of waste management.

Speaking on the proposals, David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Public Protection, said:-

“Reuse centres have proved popular in other areas and have seen recycling figures raise. It is also helps the Environment Department to maximise its income streams in addition to helping a much loved local charity raise valuable funds. If approved I am sure it will be welcomed by those people who wish to see more facilities for recycling unwanted items and will help towards achieving our recycling of 70% by 2025.”

If approved the shop would open in June later this year.
