Proposals to Increase Capacity at Two Wrexham Primary Schools
Proposals to increase the capacity at two Wrexham schools to help meet rising demand for provision are to be debated next week.
In a report due to go before Wrexham’s Executive Board, it has been proposed that at capacity at Alexandra School and Ysgol Plas Coch is increased to help meet the rising demand for town centre education.
Both schools are proposed to increase by 105 pupil places raising the capacity from 210 to 315. This will increase the Published Admission Number for each school from 30 per year to 45.
Within the report it has been recommended that a consultation on the proposed increase in capacity will begin, subject to approval from the Executive Board.
If approved the consultation will take place between 10th February 2016 and 24th March 2016. The consultation is required take place for at least 42 days with at least 20 of these days being school days.
Details within the Executive Board states: “The proposed permanent increases to the published admission numbers, at both Alexandra and Ysgol Plas Coch, are being undertaken in order to meet
the growing demand within the town centre. Both English and Welsh medium schools are subject to increasing oversubscription and there are a growing number of admission appeals across the town centre.”
With regards to Alexandra School the report notes that Wrexham Council have ‘received approval in principal from Welsh Government, through the 21st Century Schools Strategic Outline Plan (SOP) for funding to enable the provision of a four classroom extension, with associated parking and outdoor space’.
The proposals will also see the replacement of existing temporary accommodation with purpose
built classrooms and associated resource spaces at Ysgol Plas Coch.
Also going before the Executive Board on Tuesday are proposals to demolish the former Groves school and to later develop further education provision on the site.
