Plans to develop a CCTV scheme between Wrexham and Flintshire were discussed at the Customers, Performance and Resources Scrutiny Committee yesterday.

If the scheme is successful, it would appear that a joint CCTV operating system between the two counties could be based at either the People’s Market in Wrexham or at Redwither Tower on the Wrexham Industrial Estate.

CCTV monitoring in North Wales currently takes place through six separate operations, with one in each local authority area. However at the Regional Leadership Board meeting on 1 February 2013, a consensus was reached to proceed with a regional operation using two centres.

This decision to use a joint two-tier system was backed by the Executive Board in March.

Cllr Hugh Jones, lead member for communications, partnerships and collaborations said in the meeting that the Council are working in partnership with Flintshire to develop a joint CCTV operating system. He said: “We are looking at a number of options. Option one is a Wrexham only based option based in the existing location in the People’s Market.

“The second option is a Wrexham and Flintshire one based at the People’s Market.

“The third option is a Wrexham only one at Redwither Tower and option four is a Wrexham and Flintshire one at Redwither Tower.”

It is believed that savings of £50,000 to £80,000 in operational costs could be made by moving to Redwither Tower.
