The Christmas spirit has been alive and well in Wrexham this month, with nearly 60,000 people visiting the town’s two biggest events – dispelling the social media myth that nothing good ever happens here.

Visitor figures released released for the Victorian Christmas Market, which took place on December 6th, show that a whopping 32,823 people visited the Town Centre for this annual and extremely popular event.

The event, held in St Giles Church, Church Street, Regent Street and saw more than 100 stalls offering festive fare to visitors from across the region.

It was the second time that the one day event expanded through the town centre, with fairground rides on Queens Square and for the first time Christmas stalls on Henblas Street.

The three day Christmas Village that place last Friday and over the weekend also drew impressive crowds to the town – who turned out in force despite the rather bleak and cold weather on Saturday.

It was the first time such an event took place in town, with festive chalets selling Christmas gifts and food on Llwyn Isaf and Queens Square.

An 27,000 people visited across the three day period – specific figures can’t be given because there are no foot counters in the area.

It is thought day one of the event attracted 7,500 people and despite the event closing early due to wet and windy weather on Saturday, 6,000 people braved the elements to support the village.

Sunday proved to be the most popular day of the event, with an estimated 13,500 visitors embracing the festive spirit and making the most of the somewhat better weather conditions.

The Christmas Village seemed to have a positive impact on town centre footfall as well – with the busiest Sunday we can remember for a while!

Leader of the Council, Cllr Mark Pritchard, said: “This is an amazing figure and is fantastic news for those who work in the town centre.

“I know that people came from across the region and they were delighted by what was on offer including the street entertainment and the magical atmosphere that the town centre has this year.

“The new lights have also made a big difference and I would like to thank everyone involved for making sure this year’s event, and all the other Christmas events, have been so successful.
