A new supermarket could be developed just outside Wrexham Town Centre, creating around 50 jobs for the area, with the application claiming it will not compete with local existing businesses.

In new proposals submitted to Wrexham Council it has been recommended that Aldi develop a new supermarket on Ruthin Road. The proposed site for the development is on the former Wrexham Council and ambulance depot station, which is due to be demolished and cleared.

At present there is only one Aldi store in Wrexham, which is located on Plas Coch Retail Park. However across the country the company, which launched its first UK store in 1990, now operates over 500 stores and 7000 across Europe, North America and Australia.

If the application for the new store is successful, it will be located directly opposite the Morrison’s supermarket.

Speaking about the proposed development, the application’s Design and Access Statement notes: “As a foodstore with predominantly own labelled brands, Aldi would not compete directly with existing businesses within Wrexham. For instance, it does not have an in store butchers, fishmonger or cafe and does not sell cigarettes or lottery tickets. This, therefore allows local businesses to flourish as customers link trips with the Aldi store and other local shops”

The development of the store itself would consist of internal floorspace of 1,742sqm and a sales area of 1,254sqm. The overall design of the supermarket has been created to allow for a ‘contemporary and modern style’ building, with materials chosen to compliment the neighbouring area.

Access to the new supermarket would be provided via Ruthin Road, with Aldi sharing the same entrance at Morrisons’s.

A total of 134 parking spaces have been proposed for the development, six of which will provide provision for disabled parking spaces and an additional 12 spaces for bikes.

It is estimated that around 50 jobs could be created from the opening of the new store, providing roles for 25 part time staff and 25 full time staff.

The proposed opening hours of the development would be from 8am – 11pm Monday to Saturday and 10am – 8pm on Sunday’s and Bank Holidays.

It is anticipated the application will go before Wrexham’s Planning Committee at a later date.
