A new Reuse Shop is to be developed in Wrexham, after councillors unanimously approved proposals to locate the unit at one of the Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centre’s.

Yesterday members of the Executive Board voted in favour of creating a Reuse shop on Wrexham Eco Park, Bryn Lane – which will operate under a contract with FCC Environment.

Within the Council report (viewed in full here) it notes: “WCBC have a long term contract to work in partnership with FCC Environment, which commenced in 2009 and under this contract three Household Waste Recycling sites are managed across the borough, Bryn Lane on Wrexham’s Industrial Estate, Brymbo and Plas Madoc. All have facilities for recycling including wood and rubble.”

This proposed reuse shop would also assist Wrexham Council in meeting its own recycling targets of 70% recycled waste by 2025 as reuse shops have proven incredibly successful in helping reduce the carbon impact of waste management.

Lead Member for Environment and Public Protection David A.Bithell described the proposals as a ‘good news story’, adding that it is a ‘fantastic initiative’.

A proportion of the profits generated would also be used by Nightingale House Hospice to fund their charitable activities throughout the county. FCC Environment recommended choosing Nightingale being the ideal charity of choice due to its reputation as a 3 sector operator and the direct involvement the charity has had in providing care and support to Wrexham residents.

Nightingale House would be contracted to receive 35% of all net profits earned from the sales of this proposed reuse shop while Wrexham County Borough Council and FCC Environment would divide remaining profits 50/50.

In addition to paying WCBC the proposed annual profit share, FCC will provide the estimated £100k capital funding for the project which will include the provision of a bespoke modular building for the shop, all preparatory works for the reuse area including new branded reuse signage across all HWRCs.
