New kit for youth football team thanks to money recovered from criminals

Young footballers in Chirk are being kitted out with tracksuit tops thanks to money recovered from criminals.

The cash is collected through proceeds of crime rules and distributed to projects in the community by the Police and Community Trust (PACT).

The aim of such projects is to encourage pride in the community, respect for others and to help steer people, often youngsters, away from crime and anti-social behaviour.

Under the scheme’s small grant fund £250 has recently been allocated to a new Under 7’s football team in Chirk.

Anti-social behaviour has fallen significantly as a result of previous PACT funded schemes in the area.

PCSO Martin Griffiths said; “Local residents have taken it upon themselves to provide sports activities for local youths. This is an extension of this work for the local area.”

Elsewhere in the county borough £350 was recently awarded towards the Keep Safe in Gwersyllt project. This involved planting flowers, a litter pick and graffiti removal in Bradley and tidy up work around the Gwersyllt Resource Centre.

The money was also used to provide fire safety awareness sessions with youths and anti-social awareness talks in which young people are told about the effects such behaviour has on elderly residents.

The resource centre also hosted an intergenerational tea party where youths helped make sandwiches and served tea, coffee and cakes to elderly residents.
