The minister responsible for government proposals to close Wrexham’s Remploy plant has been warned of the human cost of her decision.

Wrexham MP Ian Lucas and Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones met with the Minister for Disabled People Maria Miller at the Department for Work and Pensions this morning.

Both MPs set out how the proposed closure was affecting their constituents and how much the plant was valued locally.

Despite the minister defending her plans, she did not refuse to discuss proposals from its workers to keep the plant open and Mr Lucas said “the fight will go on” to keep the plant a going concern.

Speaking after the meeting, Susan Elan Jones MP said: “We made it very clear to the minister that her proposals directly affect real people.

“In both Wrexham and Clwyd South, these plans are having a direct impact on the lives of people with disabilities – and Ministers must never forget that fact.”

During the meeting, Mr Lucas once more asked the Minister for detailed figures regarding the Wrexham plant and its operation.

He said: “The Minister once again refused to give the figures to me directly, but she did suggest they could be made available to a group directly engaged in taking the plant on.

“Pulling together such a group should be the key task for those who want to see the plant stay open. I have more meetings regarding Remploy this week, and will continue to push to secure the factory’s future.

“The fight goes on to save the Wrexham Remploy plant.”
