Warnings of an increase of air pollution across the country have been issued for today – with an increased chance of ‘Saharan dust’ hitting the region.

The Daily Air Quality Index has forecast moderate levels of air pollution in Wrexham throughout the day, this is on the lower scale for a ‘moderate’ warning but for those with certain health issues ought be aware.

The increased risk of air pollution comes as a result of Saharan dust, which are only expected for a short period of time. Levels should rise in southwestern parts of England on Wednesday evening and spread across other parts of England and Wales during Wednesday night and Thursday.

Details released by the Met Office regarding the Saharan dust state: “A band of rain associated with a cold front will bring a change of airmass from the Atlantic, pushing the dust clear of the east coast of England by the end of Thursday. The rain may lead to some deposits of dust being left on surfaces.

“Over the next day or so the mild southerly airflow currently affecting the UK brings an increased chance of seeing some Saharan dust. This dust has been lifted from its source in west Africa by strong winds and is being blown northwards as it is caught up in the weather systems heading towards the UK.”

The air pollution does come with health advice, with Defra stating: “Adults and children with lung problems, and adults with heart problems, who experience symptoms, should consider reducing strenuous physical activity, particularly outdoors. Enjoy your usual outdoor activities.”

However the health advice carries onto say: “Adults and children with heart or lung problems are at greater risk of symptoms. Follow your doctor’s usual advice about exercising and managing your condition. It is possible that very sensitive individuals may experience health effects even on Low air pollution days.”
