Work to open a second exit at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital remains ongoing with a meeting with all interested parties due to take place this month.

A second exit from the hospital leading onto Croesnewydd Road was installed at the overspill car park several months ago, however remains fenced off – with many people in touch asking why it is not opening.

Congestion issues at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital have been well documented, with an independent report on the topic commissioned at the start of 2016.

The report found that at the time of the 1600 parking spaces available at the hospital the report found that at peak times demand for space can exceed those spaces by around 10%.

It was also found that expanding the car park was not an option with all suitable land on the site has ‘already been made available for parking’.

One option put forward to ease congestion was a ‘Park and Ride’ option, which was announced as a potential option which was being explored.

However issues exiting both the main car park and overspill have not eased in recent months, with many questioning when the second exit near the new Ambulance and Fire Services Resource Centre will be opened.

It has since been confirmed that a meeting with all involved parties will take place this month to progress the completion of the exit.

A spokesman for the Health Board said: “The new road junction directly linking the Hospital’s rear car park with Croesnewydd Road was installed as part of the new combined Ambulance and Fire Brigade development undertaken by the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST).

“We are working with WAST and Wrexham County Borough Council to secure completion of this access to benefit people accessing car parking on the Wrexham Maelor site.”

Richard Davies, Assistant Director of Capital and Estates for the Welsh Ambulance Service, added: “The Trust is keen to progress this matter and we can confirm that a meeting has been arranged in early December for further discussions with all parties.”

We have approached Wrexham Council for a comment a month ago, and in the past week, regarding their involvement and are awaiting further information over their input to the process.
