Lord Street could benefit from council investment to help rejuvenate Wrexham town centre, following on from a first phase of street works last year.

In July 2017 Wrexham.com reported that members of the Executive Board had unanimously backed proposals to allocate £270,000 to town centre improvements after a budget underspend – that ended up being part of a several hundred thousand pound project that ripped up red bricks and replaced it with new paving in the town centre along with new street furniture – pictured below.

Council Leader Mark Pritchard previously said they were waiting for end of year accounts before progressing with the ‘commitment’ to Phase 2.

Today Cllr Pritchard has told us he would like to see Lord Street get a revamp – if he can get the political support to do so.

Cllr Pritchard said, “We’ve obviously done Phase One and I did say some time ago there would be three or four phases.

“With Phase Two now I am hoping I can get the political support to do Lord Street. It would be from the King Street bus station through down to Queens Square. It is an important part, a corridor, as you come in if you are visiting Wrexham or say if you come into Wrexham on the bus.

“First impressions matter to me, and I think the cleanliness and the upkeep of the town is important.”

“I think money does need to be spent on Lord Street, I think the surface needs to be replaced with what we’ve done in the other parts of the town center and the street furniture and reworking it.

“We have to be brave and continually invest in town, the businesses are coming back into town now, recently there’s been some fantastic announcements for the town. I think with retail, commercial and residential, the mix is right.

“We as a council will have to spend, and for far too long in the past we haven’t spent on the town centre.

“I don’t think it’s just about us, I think the Welsh Government obviously have to come to the table too. We are we are in discussions with them, so hopefully we can have some money from them to reinvest back into the town on the infrastructure.”

“As I have said, I have had political support in the past to improve the town, and I hope it continues.”
