A new supported housing scheme will be built in Llay after proposals were backed by councillors.

The development, which will provide accommodation for four tenants, will be built on land on Eleventh Avenue in Llay.

In the plans submitted to Wrexham Council earlier this year, each apartment is described as having an open plan kitchen, living and dining areas, bedroom and assisted bathroom.

Two support staff jobs will also be created for the scheme.

Background about the proposals provided within the application’s initial design and access statement, explained that “Ainsley Gommon Architects have been appointed by First Choice Housing Association to develop proposals for a new build supported housing” at the site.

It is also noted that the scheme has been “developed in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council following the identification of housing need for four no. residents with high support needs within the Llay area.”

A decision on the application was due earlier this month, however was deferred following a request for a site visit from the two Llay councillors to see the potential impact the two storey build would have on the nearby bungalows.

Speaking on Friday after the site visit, planning officer David Williams explained that the principle of residential development has already been established on the site and that there are “no material planning reasons why this couldn’t be supported.”

Chairman of the committee, Cllr Mike Morris also noted that a planning condition can be put in place to prevent any ‘overlooking’ from the new development into the adjoining properties.

Cllr Paul Pemberton noted that he had concerns initially with the two storey build, however subject to the conditions he would move the recommendation to approve the development.

This was seconded and the application was approved unanimously by members of the committee.
