Hundreds of Doctor Who fans attended the Odeon’s 3D screening of the Doctor’s 50th Anniversary episode on Saturday night.

It was fezzes and bow ties galore at Wrexham’s Odeon cinema this weekend, as Doctor Who fans celebrated the 50th Anniversary of everyone’s favourite Time Lord.

The cinema on Eagles Meadow was one of the 1,500 cinemas across the world that screened ‘The Day of The Doctor’ in 3D. Originally the episode was due to be shown in two screens , however due to popular demand a third screen (as well as a 9:30 showing) was added along with two matinee shows which were screened yesterday.

‘The Day of The Doctor’ saw the return of David Tennant, who starred alongside current Doctor, Matt Smith and John Hurt. Two special cameo appearances also featured in the episode, but for those who haven’t seen it yet, we won’t give the game away. It would be ‘spoilers’ after all.

We popped along to one of the 7:30pm screenings on Saturday night and left feeling that more episodes of Doctor Who should be shown in 3D. The episode itself has received mixed reviews, and while the episode was very enjoyable, we left feeling slightly underwhelmed at some of the scenes. However for many  it ticked all the right boxes, with many fans applauding the episode once it had finished.

Those who chose to watch it in the cinema were also treated to two short videos. The first featured a Sontaran telling you why you need to turn your phone off in the cinema (while discussing why eating popcorn is an evil thrill); and a second video of David Tennant and Matt Smith guiding you though the art of 3D.

The episode was simulcast on cinema screens and TV screens across the world, and over the weekend received a Guinness World Record for the largest simulcast of a TV drama. In total the episode was screened in 94 countries across 6 continents.

Celebrations for the 50th Anniversary episode began earlier last week, as the Tardis materialised on Queens Square on Monday as part of its tour across Wales. You can view photos from the day here.
