Emergency services work to clear the lorries in the pouring rain as the A483 southbound remains shut.

(Update to initial story at the bottom)

Huge tailbacks have hit Wrexham after two lorries collided on the A483 this morning leaving one of them in a ditch.

The accident happened just before the Borras/Acton slip road heading towards town at around 8.12am.

The crash has caused huge queues coming down on the old Chester Road (B5445) via Holt and Gresford as the A483 southbound remains closed.

As Wrexham.com arrived on the scene at 11am emergency crews were still rushing to clear the lorries in torrential rain.

First to alert us to the situation was @wrexham follower Richard Knew (@RichKnew) who tweeted us to say: “collision on the A483 just before Gresford roundabout towards Wrexham looks like just happened tail backs starting.”

Delays are expected to continue for the next few hours.

Update 12:30:

We have had a quick drive around and all southbound traffic is being sent off from the Rossett turn off of the A483. This is creating major delays and gridlock in Gresford / Rossett / Marford. Even the back roads eg. Borras Lane are busy and have the odd HGV on! The Gresford Roundabout, Llan y Pwll link road and the like are quiet though as no traffic is reaching them apart from via the old Wrexham Rd.

Here is a picture of the traffic coming off the Rossett turn off:

Update 2.45pm

The A483 southbound is now reopened 6 hours after the crash first took place, but it’s still having a massive knock on effect on the B5445 through Gresford. Queues are going back for miles through the village as drivers appear to be unaware of the A483 reopening. Hopefully traffic will return to normal, but these are some of the worst tailbacks witnessed in Wrexham for a while. We have also had people in contact to say that the A483 near Chester is still bumper to bumper.
