Huge success for Wrexham Inclusion Football Club’s first disability football tournament

Over 200 players joined together last weekend to compete in Wrexham Inclusion Football Club’s first disability football competition.

Held at The Rock, home of Cefn Druids, the event brought together 24 teams across the UK – including from Shrewsbury, Skelmersdale, Doncaster, Sherwood, Kidderminster, Leek and of course the home town teams from Wrexham.

The event was held in memory of long-term service user and friend of the club, Richard Williams, who sadly passed away in April 2017.

Three levels of competition were all played in great spirits and after playing a huge seven matches in their group stages – all teams then we’re categorised into one of six competitions.

On offer was the Inclusion Cup and Plate and the Community Cup and Plate.

After a gruelling nine matches totalling over 90 minutes of football for all finalists, the winners were as follows:-

Inclusion Cup Winners – St Christophers A; Runners up – SKEM men aces A

Inclusion Plate Winners – Doncaster blue; Runners up – Wrexham Inclusion A

Diversity Cup Winners – Leek Town Tigers; Runners up – St Christophers B

Diversity Plate Winners – Sherwood 4; Runners up – Leek town lynx

Community Cup Winners – Autonomy Football club; Runners up – Wrexham C

Community Plate Winners – Doncaster Black; Runners up – The Whych Leek Town

Over 200 players joined in today and over 200 spectators attended to watch the huge sporting event.

Speaking after the tournament, Carl Eaton, manager of SKEM men Ace’s, said: “It is the best competition we have ever attended and we are only second to Wrexham in the UK for the most travelled clubs. A huge well done today.”

General manager Wayne Greenshields added: “Today was enjoyed for all the right reasons and the memory of our beloved and lost player, Richard Williams who loved days like today. He will remembered through legacy building days like today.

“The volunteers on show were brilliant and the club would not of coped with such huge numbers if not for the dedication of our team.

“Wrexham Inclusion Football Club would like to put on record our thanks to Cefn Druids for the use of the facility, our volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly, our spectators and of course our teams who travelled to make it a truly brilliant day for all.”
