Home Energy Help for Town Centre Residents
Residents living near Wrexham town centre may be entitled to a free home energy assessment, a boiler upgrade and loft insulation as part of the Vibrant and Viable Places scheme.
The VVP scheme aims to regenerate town centres and bring properties up to modern standards.
The offer is available for home owners and private rented tenants who live in the Wrexham town centre wards of Brynffynnon, Cartrefle, Erddig, Grovesnor, Offa, Smithfield or Whitegate.
As well as the loft insulation and boiler replacement scheme, VVP funding has also allowed other work to be carried out on town centre properties, including homes on St Johns Road, where a scheme to install External Wall Insulation on the outer walls of the properties was recently completed.
The traditional properties have also been given a revamped new look due to the specially designed render used to cover the insulation.
Nicola Smith, a resident of St John’s Road, had similar works done to her property already. Speaking about the insulation, Nicola said: “I haven’t had to put the heating on at all so far this year which is great.
“I’ve also noticed less noise coming in from outside so I think the extra layer of insulation has helped soundproof the building. The street looks a lot tidier now too.”
Local Councillor for Whitegate, Brian Cameron said: “I applaud the work that has been done and thank both a Wrexham County Borough Council and Welsh Government for their help. The work carried out under Vibrant and Viable Places Schedule has not only given residents the opportunity to save on the heating bills but also made the houses look more modern.”
According to the Energy Saving Trust, a mid-terraced solid walled property, such as those on St John’s Road, could save as much as £175 a year on fuel costs, after having External Wall Insulation installed, whereas a semi-detached property could save up to £260.
Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Ian Roberts added: “The work that’s being carried out on these homes is making a huge difference to these streets. The houses now look like brand new from the outside and it’s great to see that we are tackling fuel poverty in areas like this by improving the heat efficiency of properties.
“We are working to ensure that more homes around the County Borough are able to benefit from similar schemes. I would encourage any residents living in these wards to take advantage, get in touch, and see if help is available.”
If you live in one of the eligible wards, and you think your boiler might not be functioning efficiently or has broken down, or that your property would benefit from loft insulation please contact Tracey Roberts (Wrexham County Borough Council’s Project Officer) on 01978 298993 to make an appointment for a Home Energy Assessment. Eligibility for the measures is subject to strict criteria and technical survey and also on a first come first served basis.
The scheme also received funding from the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). It is organised by Wrexham Council, in partnership with contractors, Mitie, who will be carrying out the work.
