Work has started on the green field area of the Groves site today.

The football club have said they have negotiated and signed a two year lease on the nearby 9 Acre playing field for the ‘interim’ period before a proposed move to the Groves. Preplanning meetings have been held, and legal and planning work has been taking place ahead of that move.

Wrexham Supporters Trust are being offered a full repair and insurance lease for the section of the Groves site by Wrexham Council at peppercorn rent with certain condition that protects the site from being exploited by property developers preying on football clubs, as has blighted Wrexham’s history.

A proposed new training ground will consist of a purpose-built training venue with brand new pitches along with a parking areas.

Today works vans and a digger were on the site, and we asked Wrexham Council about the move.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council, said today, “The works on the site at the moment are for ground investigation works in order to assess the suitability of the site to move forward the plans for a new training ground for Wrexham AFC. The plans to lease the site to the club will be subject to the planning process and addressing the covenant.”

“I am delighted to see these works moving forward.”

The move of the football club to the Groves is of interest to Wrexham Council, as Cllr Phil Wynn, lead member for education, said previously: “Wrexham Council is delighted to be working with Wrexham AFC to provide them with a new training site near the former Groves and freeing up Nine Acre with a view to putting a 21st century school on that site instead.”
