New state of the art facilities at a Wrexham primary school have been officially unveiled.

The facilities at Alexandra School had their grand unveiling by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr John Pritchard on Monday 5 December.

The £1 million scheme commenced in June and saw four new classrooms built for the Special Education needs department along with the conversion of some of the rooms into therapy rooms.

Works also took place to create a staff room, office space and additional WC provision.

Welcoming the work carried out at the school, Janet Cannon, Chair of Governors, said: “I am delighted with the sympathetic extension to the school.  It provides much needed space and, along with the improvements to the existing facilities, will ensure that the needs of all pupils and staff will continue to be met at Alexandra.”

Cllr Michael Williams, Lead Member for Children’s Services and Education, said: “The new facilities will further improve the educational experience at Alexandra for all its pupils and I know staff and Governors are very pleased with the improvements.

“If we want our young people to increase their aspirations and realise their full potential we have to give them a learning environment that is equipped for the 21st Century.”

Work on the school was jointly funded by Wrexham Council and Welsh Government through its 21st Century Schools and Education Programme.

The Programme aims to transform the learning experience of students ensuring they are taught in classrooms with the technologies and facilities needed to deliver a 21st Century curriculum.

The works have been built and developed by the Council and Read Construction.

William Jones, Contracts Manager with Read Construction, described the extension project as an ‘important part of the modernisation of Wrexham schools which we are pleased to be a part of’.

He added: “Read engaged with the children and staff throughout the construction process, and are delighted to hand over a modern learning environment to the school.|

The new facilities have also been welcomed by Leader of Wrexham Council, Cllr Mark Pritchard, who said: “We remain committed to providing quality education to our young people and our schools improvement programme is progressing very well.”

Other schools in Wrexham currently undergoing 21st Century funded works are in Caia Park which will see two new schools built to replace the existing Hafod y Wern and Gwenfro primary schools.

Works are also underway at Penycae Primary school, Plas Coch Primary, Bryn Alyn secondary and Gwersyllt.

The total investment in these schools will be more than £20 million in the coming months
