The Cefn Mawr Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) is offering free places on a one-day course for local people and building professionals to examine the conservation and repair of traditional brickwork and terracotta.

The course on the 18 December is the latest 1-day course in the successful traditional building skills and awareness training programme, which forms part of the Cefn Mawr THI. The THI itself is also a grants programme which has brought about the restoration of more than 23 traditional buildings so far in Cefn Mawr.

Previous courses have been well received by local people and professionals alike and have included courses on traditional joinery, lime mortar pointing and plastering, traditional methods for the eradication of damp, and traditional stonemasonry.

Cefn Mawr and the surrounding area was once nationally important for the manufacture of bricks and terracotta. Ruabon brick and terracotta work was one of the principal building materials of Victorian and Edwardian Britain, and these products were also exported throughout the world. The repair and conservation of Wrexham’s brick and terracotta heritage will help preserve for future generations the fruits of this historically important industry and the architectural heritage it has left behind. This course will not only help raise awareness of the importance of this heritage, but will offer practical advice on its restoration and repair.

The course includes the history of brickwork and terracotta, manufacturing techniques, reasons for failure and methods of repair, conservation and repair, cleaning and maintenance and even taking a look at local examples around Cefn Mawr.

A limited number of places are still available on the course. Please contact Nathan Evans on 01978 814920 to book your place.1978 814920

The course will be delivered by Historic Building Consultant, Kevin Stubbs, on 18 December at the George Edwards Hall, Cefn Mawr. It will run from 9.30 – 4.00 pm
