The former Ebeneser Chapel on Chester Street is set to be knocked down and replaced with flats.

The chapel was listed for sale in June 2014 for £500,000 and is on the border of the newly adopted Masterplan development site, with the town’s war memorial to the south.

The proposed development would see 23 new two bedroom flats built in a building tiered up to five storeys.

There will be a similar number of parking spaces on the ground floor, with residential space above.

The nearby Waterworld car park is mentioned in reference to parking, however there is no mention of the wider proposals for that site as per the new Masterplan which could see the carpark developed.

The planning application describes the development as a ‘further landmark apartment building within the town centre’, with the former Granny Midges site and the new development at the end of St Giles Way mentioned as design peers.

The chapel, within a weak stones throw of the police station, is described as an ‘opportunist target for vandalism’ as it is now vacant. Fabric defects and plumbing issues are also cited to why the current building is a candidate for demolition rather than reuse.

The plans will be heard by Wrexham Council’s Planning Committee at a future date.
