Techniquest Glyndŵr has been awarded funding to bring an exciting programme of events to Wrexham this summer.

Their project, “11 Mile Journey – Discovering North Wales’ Amazing Engineering” will celebrate the unique engineering heritage of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal, which this year marks 10 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The science centre is developing new, interactive workshops and family-friendly activities which will demonstrate the amazing feat of engineering that makes the 11 miles of canal, including two aqueducts, so special.

These activities will be delivered free of charge at community events and schools across the area from June-October this year.

Confirmed events so far include visits to the the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, a family fun day at Trevor Basin on 29th June, and workshops at Ty Mawr Country Park on 26th July.

The activities will contribute to a wider programme of exciting events for everyone to get involved in; including family fun days, dance workshops, photography and poetry competitions, and much more; which will be taking place across the region this year to commemorate 10 years since the inscription of the Canal and Aqueduct as a World Heritage Site.

The events are being delivered in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB, and Canal and River Trust, amongst others. Keep an eye out for details of these events as they are announced!

Techniquest Glyndŵr is currently looking for engineers to collaborate with on this project, to assist with the delivery of these activities and act as industry experts for our audiences to meet and engage with.

Engineers involved in the project will benefit from bespoke support, information and training from Techniquest Glyndŵr to boost their confidence, and be given the opportunity to engage with different people and enhance their own public engagement skills.

A minimum commitment of attending one 90-minute training session and one event for the project is all that is asked, no previous experience necessary.

Dawn Pavey, projects and fundraising coordinator at Techniquest Glyndŵr said: “I am very excited that Techniquest Glyndŵr is working in partnership with local organisations, engineering firms, county councils and professional institutes to bring workshops and activities to the communities that live on the doorstep of the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site.

“Techniquest Glyndŵr is motivated to inspire new audiences with science and engineering, and I feel this project will enable us to raise awareness of the unique engineering of the area and inspire the next generation of engineers.”

Earlier this week Wrexham.com reported that Techniquest Glyndŵr had secured the funding for its relocation to the former TJ Hughes building in the town centre.

Plans for the new space – which include an activity wall, planetarium, laboratory, workshops, a ‘central fun zone’, shop and meeting space – are expected to be approved by Wrexham Council in the near future.

Any engineers who are interested in volunteering for this project, as well as any schools, community groups or event organisers in the local area who would like to know more about these activities, are invited to contact Hannah Marubbi ([email protected]) or Dawn Pavey ([email protected]) at Techniquest Glyndŵr, or phone 01978 293948 / 01978 293400.
