Guerilla Grass Cutting As Council Refuses Permission To Mow

Due to recent Council cuts one thing that is being cut less is grass in and around Wrexham, with permission formally denied for public cutters.

Several people have been in touch asking if they took matters into their own hands and cut grass around them would they get into any trouble.

One example of those cutting the grass themselves is above, where Llay United FC tweeted the above picture to Wrexham.com and Wrexham Council saying “We gave Cut it 3 times now for the kids to play, it must be your turn now” using the hashtag #NoPrideInOurStreets.

We have heard of several other areas where people have trimmed verges, mown areas of land and cleaned up a footpath.

We asked Wrexham Council if there would be any liability issues if a members of the public decide to cut an area themselves, and if members of the public would ‘get into trouble’ if they cut the grass.

The Council told us they are: “…responsible for those areas of land and as such holds public liability insurance for any works undertaken on the land. In the event of a claim against the Council in respect of the actions of an individual or organisation on Council land, the Council or its insurers would seek indemnity from the individual or organisation.”

Specific to the query on if people would get into any kind of trouble we were told “Works undertaken on Council land without express permission are unauthorised and are carried out at the risk of the individual or organisation.

“The Council will not be granting permission for such works to be undertaken.”

We asked the Council if there was a list of land that is subject to lesser cutting schedules, however were told there is no such list.

Those who are cutting the grass themselves appear to be going rogue becoming guerrilla gardeners in the process, an established practice where people garden on land where they do not have the legal right to do so.

We would be interested to hear from anyone who is cutting the Council’s grass in their community, and if they have had any issues or support in doing so – tweet us @wrexham or email [email protected] .
