A local leisure centre has announced the launch of inclusive swimming aimed at those with who are living with a disability and especially those who are living with Dementia.

Chirk Leisure and Activity Centre, based on Chapel Lane, began offering dementia friendly swimming sessions in September 2017.

The leisure centre is expected to receive an award from Wrexham Dementia Friends and the Alzheimer’s Society having worked towards becoming Dementia Friendly.

It has now further expanded its scheme by offering fully inclusive swimming aimed at those who are living with a disability.

Local Borough Councillor Frank Hemmings has given his full support for this service,

Cllr Hemmings, who is a member of Wrexham Dementia Friends steering group, has created over 100 Dementia Friends in Chirk in his role as a Dementia Champion and says that the leisure centre has worked with the Alzheimer’s Society to achieve its status.

Centre Manager David Watkin described the initiative as a “great opportunity for people across Wrexham who are living with a disability to take part in swimming along with a carer”.

The sessions themselves will be provided free of charge supported by Active Wrexham and GOGA (Go out get active) who will finance the project.

David added that he is “pleased that his staff and the centre were being recognised for the work they had done to achieve dementia friendly status”.

The relaunch takes place from 2pm on the 14th May with an information session and a coffee whilst regular swim times are held Mondays from 2:45.
