Households who want to continue having their green bins emptied by the council from April are being reminded to pay.

From April 1st the local authority will no longer empty your green garden waste bin if you haven’t paid for the service.

The political decision was previously explained as being due to ongoing cuts to local government and attempts to generate revenue, and therefore the authority was left with “no choice but to join other councils in charging for this discretionary service.”

Wrexham Council have released a quick explainer on the cost and how your garden waste will be collected from April:

How much will it cost?

Having your garden waste bin emptied will cost £25 per bin per year.

Don’t want your green bin to be collected?

That’s no problem, you can either keep your garden waste bin or ask us to take it away.

Can you change your mind?

Yes, if you change your mind you can pay the charge and collections will start. Remember though that if you have your bin taken away and you change your mind you would need to buy a new garden waste bin – so if you’re not sure, keep hold of it!

How do I pay?

The payment system is up and running so you can pay now! The quickest and easiest way to do it will be by signing up and paying for the service online, through MyAccount. You will need to register an account with MyAccount first if you haven’t already.

If I don’t pay, how can I get rid of garden waste?

Garden waste can be taken to the Household Recycling Centres located at Bryn Lane on Wrexham Industrial Estate and The Lodge or Plas Madoc. Home composting is also encouraged if space allows.

Payment can be made either online or by telephone 01978 298989 to register for the service.
