Caia Park Community Council that represents around 12,500 people of the area become the first council in Wales to declare itself a Frack-Free Zone.

The Community Council unanimously agreed to the motion brought forward by its chairman, Plaid Cymru councillor Marc Jones.

He said the motion was a “symbolic but significant” statement in support of local campaigners opposed to plans to drill for gas at nearby Borras.

Cllr Jones said: “The council, which is made of Plaid Cymru, Labour and independent members, was unanimous in opposing the plans and we hope that this will be the first of many councils that declare themselves Frack-Free zones. Fracking and drilling for unconventional gas is being rejected across the world and it’s important that the first fracking site in Wales – at Borras – does not get the go-ahead.

“I’m delighted there was support across the political spectrum for the motion and we will now be contacting both Wrexham Council and the Welsh Government to try to gain more political support for the campaign. There is a growing realisation that fracking is both too risky and will continue our dependence on fossil fuels at a time when we need to be focussing on renewable energy.”

We are told that the Community Council agreed a motion with the following resolutions:

This council resolves:

  • To oppose fracking and the drilling for unconventional gas
  • To express support for the protection camp and local residents peacefully resisting the test drilling at Borras Head Farm, Commonwood, Wrexham.
  • To write to Wrexham Council supporting the decision of its planning committee to refuse planning permission and calling for Wrexham to be declared a Frack-Free zone.
  • To declare Caia Park a Frack-Free zone.
  • To call on the Welsh Government to declare a Frack-Free Wales and do all within its powers to enforce that.
