Residents in Brymbo an the surrounding areas can now have their say on plans increase pupil numbers at a local primary school.

Wrexham Council is currently consulting on its proposals to boost capacity at St Mary’s Church in Wales (CIW) Voluntary Aided (VA) School, in Brymbo from 154 to 210 from September 2025.

This could be further increased to 315 if required as a result of future housing developments.

It comes as demand for school places in the village and surrounding area continues to grow.

The current school site is described as being on a steep hill with restricted parking, poor vehicle access and a limited outdoor playground area. ‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌

It currently utilises a playing field away from the building which pupils must access by crossing a busy road. ‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌

The site is land locked, unsuitable to meet the requirements for the new curriculum and future predicted demand for school places in the village of Brymbo and the surrounding area. ‌

Last month the BBC LDR (Local Democracy Reporting Service) reported that ‌an opportunity has arisen to secure a new site at the former steelworks site on Kent Road, less than a mile away from the current school site. ‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌

‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌The new school would be designed in a way that will allow future expansion easily if the need to increase numbers to 315 is realised.

However concerns have been raised by local councillors that even a capacity of 315 would not be enough to meet the demand if plans for hundreds of new homes in the area are given the go ahead.

The consultation period for the proposed capacity increase ends on 4 December 2023 and there are several ways to have your say:
