Award winning artists help Wrexham’s Independent Gallery
An independent gallery that was under threat from closure has attracted work by two awarding winning artists, and is on display in Wrexham town centre.
tWIG (The Wrexham Independent Gallery), based in the Butchers Market, issued a stark statement in in March over the future of the charity – warning that unless new funding sources are secured, the entity would cease to exist at the end of this month.
However in a positive turn of events the gallery has announced that two award winning artists, Sonja Benskin Mesher and Morven Browne, have offered their support and are displaying works at the gallery.
Sonja, an elected member of both the Royal Cambrian Academy and the United Society of Artists, works from her Dolgellau studio and exhibits world-wide.
She has won many distinguished prizes for her art and, with gallery outlets not just in Wales but in London, Budapest and New York.
When a friend sent her details of tWIG and its predicament Sonja researched the gallery and immediately sent over two of her jewel-like abstracts to demonstrate her support.
Commenting on her involvement with tWIG, Sonja said: “I saw their page and the gallery looks so good.”
“Wrexham feels local to us in Dolgellau. It is where we come to shop or to see the museum and Galleries”.
Designer and maker, Morven Browne is also exhibiting this month.
Since graduating from Wrexham Glyndwr University’s School of Art and Design in 2013, Scottish born Morven has exhibited widely in the UK, including at the Mall Galleries, where in 2014 she was awarded a Distinction and the Stephen Maer Prize.
Three sculptures from Morven’s “Copper Beech” series can now be seen at tWIG.
Exhibiting alongside Morven and Sonja are many local artists and craftspersons showing a range of work from up cycling, through photography and mixed media to traditional landscapes in oils.
The exhibition, “Spring Shoots” can be seen at the Wrexham Independent Gallery, Units 9 and 10 in The Butchers’ Market, until Wednesday 30th May.
