Applications to upgrade a number of mobile masts across Wrexham have been submitted.

In the past month five applications have been submitted to Wrexham Council with prior notification for: “Removal Of Existing 15M High Monopole / Antenna And Replacement With New 15M High Monopole And Antenna And Installation Of New Equipment Cabinet.”

So far there are applications to upgrade masts in Brynteg Industrial Estate, Acton, Holt Road, Brynycabanau Road and Caia Park. However as these applications have been placed over a number of weeks, we are unsure as to whether or not more will be upgraded in the future.

The applications appear to largely be for Telefonica UK, Vodafone and CITL, with the applications stating: “Telefonica UK Limited has entered into an agreement with Vodafone Limited pursuant to which the two companies plan to jointly operate and manage a single network grid across the UK.”

Additionally, in a Design and Access Statement for the building of a mast in Caia Park, it notes: “As emphasised during the roll out meeting the height increases are imperative for the combined O2 and VF network. The height increases will allow other masts in the area to be decommissioned once the CITL project has been fully implemented in the UK.

We contacted Vodafone asking if the masts were being upgraded to 4G or if they were improving coverage around the area. However we have yet to receive a comment.

The subject of mobile networks and 3G coverage has been a hot topic in the town as of late.

Over the past few weeks there have been hundreds of comments and complaints about the ongoing issues with network coverage in Wrexham, with many of the comments focusing on EE coverage.

In the past two months we have reported on the ongoing issues Wrexhamites have been having with 3G coverage from EE. Last week EE told us: “We are aware some customers have reported signal issues in the Wrexham area – engineers have attended sites in the area, and performance has now improved. We will continue to monitor the service in this area. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
