Local football team Wrexham Disabled Supporters Association FC ended 2015 on a huge high for everyone involved with a very successful presentation evening and quiz night fundraiser.

On Thursday 10th December at Starbucks Rhostyllen, the team held their very first presentation evening since forming in 2011.

Wrexham DSA FC is a disability football team covering all aspects of disability, both physical and mental. Over the past few years the club has continued to go from strength to strength and aim to provide a place for social inclusion and therapy through sport, for those in the community who would otherwise be left out of such activities.

The fundraiser was a huge success and was hosted by Andrea Calton (Store Manager) and her team at Starbucks Rhostyllen, who also helped to organise the night along with help from DSA volunteers Carl Austin, Andy Pierce and Andy Calton.

There was a fantastic turnout of players and their families, along with Wrexham fans who came along to support the night ensuring it was standing room only.

Wrexham players Rob Evans, Blaine Hudson and Wes York kindly gave up their evening and were on hand to present the trophies and individual awards, all of which had been generously sponsored by Healthcare Matters of Pentre Broughton, for which the DSA were extremely grateful.

Picking up the individual awards were; Young Players of the Year – DJ Povey and Alex Hall, Most Improved Player of the Year – Goal Keeper Dave Carr, Clubmen – Jason Storer and Stephen Edwards, Penalty Taker of the Year – Sam Lee, and Player of the Year – Mikey Harper.

Along with the Christmas Quiz and monies raised on the night, they also had a great raffle with some fantastic prizes up for grabs.

Wrexham DSA coach/volunteer Andy Pierce said: “When we sent out a tweet asking for local businesses to donate some prizes we had an overwhelming response, and when the girls at Starbucks turned on the charm the tickets flew out. There are far too many to thank individually, but if you and your business are one of the many who answered our request, then please except our sincere gratitude for your kindness. With your donations, you helped us to raise an astonishing £980 for Wrexham DSA FC!

“We love doing what we do but we can only continue to do it with people buying in to what we’re trying to achieve. Thankfully I think people do and long may it continue. We had a hugely successful 2015 on the pitch, winning six consecutive tournament finals, so to finish the year like this off the pitch and give the players the reward they deserve was simply fantastic for all involved.”

Of this amount, the volunteers who run Wrexham DSA FC have agreed that they would like to donate £500 towards the building of Wrexham Disabled Supporters Association’s second wheelchair viewing platform at the Racecourse Stadium, which is currently in the planning process.”

The scope for disability is huge and Wrexham DSA have an extremely varied group of players. Everyone is welcome and sessions are open to anyone who wishes to get involved. They hold weekly training sessions every Wednesday 3pm at Splash Magic/Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, aimed at enjoyment, teamwork and improving health and fitness.

*Wrexham Disabled Supporters Association FC would like to thank everyone for their continued support!
