A sod-cutting ceremony has marked the official start of work at the £806,000 refurbishment of Acton Community Centre.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Wrexham, Cllr Geoff Lowe and Cllr Jim Kelly were joined by members of Acton Community Council including Vice Chairman Edmund Boylin to launch the improvement programme at the facility on Overton Way.

The project, which has been funded by Wrexham County Borough Council in conjunction with Acton Community Council will fully refurbish and extend the existing community facility and will be known as Acton Community Resource Centre.

R.L. Davies & Son Ltd Construction has been appointed to undertake the extensive refurbishment, which is scheduled for completion in early Summer 2013, after initially being scheduled to be completed in Spring 2013.

Cllr Edmund Boylin, Vice Chair of Acton Community Council said ‘The proposed multi-purpose design of the building is aimed at meeting the diverse needs of the community and optimising the existing space for existing and new groups and organisations. I am delighted that work has started and that we can now start to put plans together for exciting future ventures.’

Local Councillor, Cllr Geoff Lowe said ‘This development continues the Council’s modernisation of local facilities to provide multi-purpose facilities catering for all sections of the community. The new facility will enable us to deliver a wide variety of activities and will give Acton a community hub it can be proud of.”

A re-location plan has been put in place by Wrexham Council for the groups who frequently use Acton Community Centre which will see them move to other suitable community facilities in Wrexham during building work.
