Surprised Glyndwr University owns 5 bedroomed new build houses in Grosvenor Gardens Rhosddu and a flat in Caxton Place, all now to be auctioned by Pugh and Co in Liverpool on 10th September. Together with other properties they should rake in £1,000,000 . Wonder what they will sell next if money gets really tight , the Racecourse ?

Grosvenir gardens student accommadation. Caxton place kept for visitors. Think there is a 2nd too. Allegedly also had a big farmhouse up coedpoeth.

In many cases, it works out cheaper to build from scratch than refurbish. And trust me, internally, it’s really not pleasant. We always had problems with the water supply, all four floors shared just two kitchens with multiple cookers. It’s not fit for purpose; you could refurb and replumb, but you’d end up sacrificing actual bedrooms to make it work. Pointless.

Its already been refurbished in its previous format, then stood empty.

They were refurbished a few years ago after international students had used the building for accommodation for many years. They have sat empty since. A few of the rooms on the ground floor are sued to store books known as the Gladstone library, but the rest of the building remains unused. There are no structural issues. When an organization requires income, why does an accommodation block with around 30 rooms remain unused?

Reading todays town centre forum round up, signs have today gone up to sell the former Scotts nightclub with planning for student flats. How viable is this when the uni in Wrexham has falling student numbers and one hall of residence has been unused for the past two years?

Glyndwr uni have paid nearly £500,000 to one consultant for their restructure over the past 10 months. Total the spend over the past 4-5 years on staff restructuring is near £1 million according to the UCU.

Today is the final day of the current academic year and should see an end to the restructure process started November 2013. According to UCU Glyndwr university VC Professor Michael Scott has threatened staff will receive letters of compulsory redundancy today. The also note the process of consultation has been deeply flawed.

A number of staff whose posts were deemed ‘at risk’ or those who applied for voluntary severance, leave today; some with over 30 years service.

I can’t see any foreign benefactor stepping in, but as per previous government recommendations a takeover by a neighbouring college or university is more likely. There will always be a university in Wrexham as the staff have the skills and expertise in many areas, it’s just a shame that the management can’t run it adequately. Those in senior posts who don’t agree with the way it is currently being run have left or are leaving. It’s like rats deserting a sinking ship.
