Discussion on Roadio 5 Live this morning saying that A&E’s in Wales are “on the brink.” Wrexham Maelor was mentioned and it was stated that the required number of consultants in their A&E department is 10, and it was acknowledged that it “doesn’t have the requisite number.” How many consultants we are short was not stated. Under staffing puts enormous pressure and stress on those staff who are working. Questions for our prospective AM’s , why are we failing to recruit consultants and how would you remedy the situation ?

Our present AM Lesley Griffiths , has worked in the Maelor and served as Health Minister in the present Labour run Assembly, this is not a new problem and yet again we are in a similar situation as last year and the year before. While party politics are being played out the public are suffering.

I would think that an answer could be gained from existing consultants rather than waste time and effort asking AMs who, lets face it, are probably going to be unable to answer without consulting an expert.

“In Wales staff turnover in emergency medicine is getting worse. We have not been able to recruit new consultants at the same level here as in other countries,” he said.
Dr Roop, who is a consultant in Wrexham, said A&E waits because wards were full were also a “continuous” problem, despite efforts by health boards to open additional hospital beds and postpone non-urgent surgery at times of high demand.” This was the gentleman speaking on the Radio 5 Live programme , turns out he actually works in the Maelor.

I would expect he has a views on what needs to be done , surely this isn’t a totally insurmountable problem that has no solution.

Change the stupid bl…y names of the Welsh health boards so that they reflect the area which they cover. At least then prospective applicants would have some idea what and where is on offer.
