There are a number of buildings in the town centre that are threatened with demolition. The Police station appears to be set to go in August 2016, Waterworld if closed will also go, Crown Buildings and the Memorial Hall have also been rumoured to be under threat as well. If all or even some of these buildings are demolished a huge hole will be created in the centre of town, I hope there is a coherent plan in the pipeline for its redevelopment and we are not left in the situation of a ” bomb site” as we were when the old Vegetable Market was demolished. What can we expect to be built on this vacant land?
Hopefully a new bus station, the present one is inadequate, as unsightly as the police station and badly sited since the opening of Eagle’s Meadow. King Street has been destroyed by the monstrosity we call the bus station and is no longer what you could call a retail area, let’s give it up to solicitors and estate agents.
Ebenezer Chapel and the house next door to it is also for sale and available for redevelopment making the site potentially even bigger!
What do you have in mind?
Public buildings? Not a chance.
Retail? Nope
Other businesses? Not suitable
Education? Not here AND Groves.
Health? Maybe but what?As there are no plans to move the Magistrates Courts most likely long term outcome will be that plus (possibly) the Memo, a new leisure facility surrounded by car park and landscaping.
Housing might be a possibility on part of the site. It would not make economic sense to pull down Waterworld and borrow £12 million to build a replacement. A debt of that size would cost over £400,000 a year in interest , if not more if interest rates go up as expected. We are told there are to be more cuts so how can they justify the added expenditure?
There are bigger plans if the Oriel gallery moves to the Peoples Market– would the library be the next for relocation?
I appreciate that the Council may have some commercially sensitive decisions etc but are we as ratepayers not entitled to be asked what WE want. The Council seem to forget that they are servants of the people not people being servants of the Council.Waterworld with its huge open space, because of the roof design, would make a fantastic art gallery and library combined but probably too radical for Wrexham Council! That would free up the present library building for a town centre police station.

Probably the Library to a Police Station but hope it turns out to be Waterworld to an art gallery and library! The People’s Market if turned into an art gallery would need money spending on it , why not spend it on Waterworld and have something that would really make Wrexham stand out from the crowd. The art world is usually able to fund things via grants and possibly lottery funding added to this is Waterworld’s unique hyperbolic roof. You will not build another building like it for £12 million!
