Clwyd South MP Simon Baynes writes…

Since my last column, I have continued to visit businesses, organisations and individuals across Clwyd South. On Friday 8th July, I was pleased to join representatives from Cornerstone representing Speed Up Britain at a mobile infrastructure site near Ruabon to see at first-hand the technology bringing real benefits to local communities in Clwyd South and supporting the Government’s ambitions on 4G and 5G rollout – particularly as broadband and mobile connectivity is an issue on which my constituents are keen to see improvements.

This month, I was honoured to be appointed a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Home Office and Ministry of Justice. I am very much looking forward to delivering on the UK Government’s commitments as Minister for Justice and Tackling Illegal Migration as well as continuing to work hard for the people of Clwyd South as your local Member of Parliament.

On Thursday 21st July 2022, it was a great pleasure to welcome Cabinet Minister Rt Hon Jacob Rees-Mogg MP to Chirk where he spoke at a meeting at The Hand Hotel Chirk about the contemporary political scene

On Tuesday 28th June, I was very pleased to sponsor a Parliamentary Reception on behalf of the Canal & River Trust to celebrate their 10th anniversary and 10 years of cleaner, greener, and more open waterways in the UK. The Trust protects and preserves more than 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales – including the Llangollen Canal, Trevor Basin and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. And I look forward to continuing to support the Canal and River Trust as they continue to broaden the appeal of waterways in Clwyd South and across the rest of the country, engaging communities and making these special places inclusive and available for all.

I was pleased to speak in the Estimates Day debate on 5th July (an annual event in the House of Commons) on Financial Support for the Welsh Economy and Funding for Devolved Institutions. I used the opportunity to talk about the UK Government’s unprecedented support for Wales – £18.4 billion, rising to £20 billion in the coming year or two – which is the most generous spending review settlement since devolution and highlights the benefit of our United Kingdom.

I also criticised the Welsh Labour-Plaid Government’s plans to add 36 more politicians to the Senedd at a cost of over £100 million per Parliament. That’s enough money to pay for 780 doctors, 800 nurses, or 740 teachers, which would be a far better use of public money.

I also praised the many people in Clwyd South and the rest of the UK who give their time free of charge to act as magistrates during Ministry of Justice Questions on 5th July. These exceptional people are the backbone of our justice system: without them, it could not function effectively.

On Tuesday 21st June, I attended the Parliamentary Reception organised by the Alliance for Intellectual Property, at which a wide range of organisations were present, including the Motion Picture Association and the Premier League. I attended in my previous role as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport given that the protection of intellectual property, whether it be films or football, is crucial to ensuring the long-term health of our highly successful cultural and sporting sectors in Wales and the rest of the UK. It was also a particular pleasure to see the Premier League Cup in all its glory!
