Young people from in Wrexham have spent this winter writing their own rap song with Community Music Wales.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Land Plas Madoc have devised new ways to connect with young people across the estate and facilitate creative output during this difficult time.

Playworkers from The Land have been making palette furniture for residents, moving all their social events online and conducting online quizzes to bring the community together.

Recently, The Land collaborated with Community Music Wales to bring experienced musicians Martin Daws and Owen Mclean together with young people virtually to write a rap about their local area.

The sessions have been running since March and both facilitators have supported the young people to write and record their own rap. The sessions have enabled the young people to express their thoughts and ideas through music, as well as provide a virtual creative output during the pandemic.

The rap is titled ‘This if our Land’ and shows the appreciation from the young people to the Playworkers and facilitators who have brought everyone together during this difficult time.

Although closed since March, The Land Adventure Playground has continued to support the young people of Plas Madoc and Playworkers continue to play a large part in children and young people’s live.

Owen Mclean aka. A Gent Orange is a creative rhythmic poet and song writer on a mission to spread love peace and positivity from Wales.

Martin Daws is a Spoken Word Poet, Writer and Creative Educator. Previously he was the Young People’s Laureate for Wales and tours with the band BARDD with Welsh Beatboxer and live looping artist Mr. Phormula.

Talking about his experience with the young people, Martin Daws said: “Being welcomed into the AVOW community and supported to make a positive contribution to the great work already happening there has been a really special experience which I treasure. Thank you to everyone.’

The young people will continue to work on their single until 2021, when Martin and Owen will join us again to record the single and an accompanying music video.

The single released in 2021, with a live performance from young people when events recommence.
