Wrexham Lager celebrating after winning nine medals in beer competitions across the world
A Wrexham’s brewery is celebrating success after being awarded nine medals in various beer competitions across the world.
Wrexham Lager entered their Wrexham Export and Bootlegger 1974 Pilsner lagers, the latter named after and characterised on a local online favourite, into competitions across Europe and Asia as well as an International Challenge throughout the year.
Wrexham Export Lager won gold medals in the Frankfurt International Beer Trophy, Asia Beer Challenge and European Beer Challenge competitions as well as silver in the Lyon International Competition and bronze in the International Beer Challenge.
Bootlegger 1974 Pilsner Lager won goal medals in the Frankfurt International Beer Trophy, Asia Beer Challenge and European Beer Challenge competitions as well as silver in the International Beer Challenge.
In total, they won one bronze, two silver and six gold medals.
Jon Roberts, a Director at Wrexham Lager, said: “We are immensely proud of our lager and pilsner, and the gold medals show that both fully deserve the recognition as premium products.
“We are extremely proud of the Frankfurt International Trophy, as well as all the other medals, as we are respectfully competing on a global platform.”
The Frankfurt International Beer Trophy is a large international competition in Germany where experienced amateurs as well as experts from all around the world taste and judge each beer together.
Jon and his team believe this concept is what distinguishes the competition from the others and makes it so specific, as it reveals what consumers actually think.
The competition has strong ties to the restaurant world and is represented each year by an honorary president of renown such as a famous German Michelin star chef.
Nils Henkel, chef at Schwarzenstein Geisenheim-Johannisberg, a restaurant with two Michelin stars to its name, was the honorary president of the 2020 Trophy.
After a year of setbacks to businesses in Wrexham and all across Wales, Jon is proud of the work he and his team have put in to achieve the awards.
He said: “Despite the worries the pandemic has produced, we feel that the award wins reflect the hard work all the team has put into carrying on production in such extreme times.
“We cannot thank our customers enough for all their support throughout – without them, none of this would be possible.”
For next year, Jon is hopeful for a bright future ahead for both his family-run business as well as the people of Wrexham affected by the pandemic.
He said: “We are constantly adapting to the changing times and are confident for the future ahead. Currently, we are working on something we believe will appeal to all of our customers, old and new, with next year being our tenth year celebration.
“Although it has been an incredible unpredictable year, one thing it has made clear is that Wrexham has a huge passion for its lager and we only want to continue to make the people of Wrexham proud. We believe good times are ahead – Iechyd Da!”
