Children at Wrexham Book Group Join Winners in Nationwide Contest
Members of Wrexham Library’s ‘Books Inside Out’ children’s writing group have reached the top spot of a national competition after designing a display based on a famous storybook elephant.
Andersen Press, the publishers of the stories of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant – created by British children’s author David McKee – wanted to mark their 40th anniversary and decided to hold a day celebrating Elmer yesterday.
To mark the day, children’s book and writing groups across the country were asked to share a photo that they felt represented 40 years of books – and members of ‘Books Inside Out’ decided to create a display featuring their drawings of Elmer, as well as other favourite characters such as Harry Potter, the Gruffalo, the BFG and the Mr Men.
Thanks to the children’s efforts, the library will now receive a set of books and furniture worth £1500.
Shan Cooper, Children’s Librarian, said: “The Books Inside Out members had great fun putting their display together, and it’s great to see that they’ve won the contest!
“They should be congratulated for all their hard work – I’m very pleased with all of them.”
Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities and Partnerships, added: “I am pleased to see children in Wrexham enthusiastically embracing this project, and congratulations are due to the team at Wrexham Library for helping to foster their enthusiasm.”
