    To celebrate 100 years of the Raf association there have been three days of events in the town. Today we had an RAF Dakota flying low over the town. I hope everyone has enjoyed the events.

    The RAF was founded on 1 April 1918 by the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service and was controlled by the British Government Air Ministry which had been established three months earlier.

    I don’t doubt that, but the RAFA, which this thread is about, wasn’t formed until 1929.

    In 1929, in the Sergeants’ Mess at RAF Andover, three men named Vernon Goodhand, Joe Pearce and Warrant Officer Bartlett met to discuss the formation of a single organisation dedicated to the welfare of serving and ex-serving RAF personnel: one which would replace the many smaller organisations that had grown to keep former servicemen in touch since the end of the First World War.
