Libraries across Wrexham are about to experience a wildlife transformation.

Rhos, Chirk, Gwersyllt Brynteg will all take part in the project which aims to help conserve the declining numbers of bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects by transforming the grounds into wildlife friendly zones.

One of the first libraries to complete the project was at Gwersyllt, which is 1 of 8 libraries in North Wales taking part in the project.

With the help of funding and contributions from external organisations the green-fingered 1st Gwersyllt Scout Group, Wrexham libraries staff and North Wales Libraries Partnership (NWLP) staff, created a wildflower bed and caterpillar café to provide nectar, food and shelter for pollinators and other wildlife all year round.

Claudia Howard, Partnership Support Officer for the NWLP said, “The project may seem unusual for libraries to undertake. However, creating habitat for pollinators is but one of many aims.

“Libraries must attract audiences, work with communities, work collaboratively and meet sustainability and environmental objectives. Working with schools, scouts, beavers, and the Youth and Justice Service, allow us to not only to raise awareness of bees and butterflies, but also libraries.

“Overall the project has been well received and people were keen to work with the NWLP. The first Gwersyllt Scouts were great fun to work with.”

In addition to gardening tasks, the children perused the butterfly and moth exhibition on loan from Bangor University Brambell Museum and Snowdonia National Park and handled the reptiles, amphibians and unusual pets from Reptile Kids.

Sandra Gardner, Manager at the Gwersyllt Community Resource Centre where the project was carried out said: “This was a fantastic day of fun activities and it was great to see the Scouts taking part in improving our local environment. The grounds of the centre have been improved by their efforts.

“We’re so grateful to Claudia Howard for organising the planting for pollinators”.
