Wrexham Students’ Union has showcased independent and local traders with its first ever Christmas market.

The two day event, which also supported student run businesses, saw members of the public, family and friends come along to have a browse and pick up some unique Christmas gifts for loved ones.

Glyn’s Bar & Lounge, the not-for-profit bar run by the Students’ Union, was filled from corner to corner by stall holders selling a range of merchandise, from knitted animals and scented candles to handmade scarves and Christmas cards.

Maisie Head, Wrexham Students’ Union’s Vice President, said: “It was great to be able to put on our Merry Market event across two days this year, and this was due to a spike in demand for stalls and from our students.

“We knew that extending the duration of the event would give more people the opportunity to get involved and see what our local community has to offer.

“We’re a small team and we’re all proud to have hosted an event where so many people were able to benefit.”

There were real reindeer and even Santa’s sleigh to join the fun, with some unsuspecting students leaving their morning lectures to be greeted by Santa’s famous helpers. Ellen Edwards, a Social Work student, said: “I love them, they’re really Christmassy!

“They brighten up the day and provide a feel-good factor’”

The Market was free to attend, with those registering their interest in advance receiving a free gift on arrival.

The event is also due to become a fixture on the local festive calendar, with organisers adding: “We can’t wait for more Merry Markets next year.”
