Wrexham MP Votes Against Changes to Sunday Trading Times
Wrexham MP Ian Lucas has voted against proposals to extend Sunday trading in England and Wales.
Last week Wrexham.com reported that MPs voted by 317 to 286 against proposals to allow councils in England and Wales to increase Sunday trading hours for large shops from their six-hour maximum.
The proposals would have passed the responsibility for making decisions on Sunday opening to local authorities.
Mr Lucas said he voted against the proposals after having been contacted by Wrexham shop workers and religious groups – and added concerns had been raised with him about the impact the proposals could have on Wrexham.
He said: “When asked for his views on Sunday trading last year, the Prime Minister specifically said there were no plans to make changes – but he appears to have changed his mind after the election.
“These changes would see the Government make local councils responsible for decisions about Sunday trading. They could see a regional lottery where different councils set up different rules and I know that prospect has raised concerns with some Wrexham businesses.
“I have also been approached by religious groups and shop workers who have their own concerns about keeping Sunday special. I have listened to what they have had to say, which was why I voted against these proposals.”
