A meet-up bringing together businesses, academics, experts and students to discuss the latest developments in the tech sector in North Wales has been held at Wrexham Glyndwr University.

The North Wales Tech meet-up, held in Glyndwr’s newly-refurbished social learning space The Gallery, was designed to give both new and returning students a taste of the tech scene in North Wales, as well as a space to discuss the latest issues and hear from industry professionals.

Among speakers at the event were Ricky Barnett, Managing Director of games developers Round Square Studios who spoke about some of the lessons he has learned setting up his company, Masters student Kate Unitt – who set out how attendees could participate in the national and international World Skills competition – and Jason Davies, the Founder and Chair of the North Wales Cyber Security Cluster.

He told attendees about the growth of small businesses linked to cybersecurity in Wales – and how Welsh firms were uniquely placed to take advantages of some of the opportunities the sector offers.
Lecturer in Computer Science at Wrexham Glyndwr University, Jessica Muirhead, said: “It was great to welcome North Wales Tech to Glyndwr, and the meet-up was exactly the kind of event our new social learning spaces were designed to hold.

“It not only gave our students the chance to hear about the latest developments in North Wales directly from industry professionals, but also the chance to meet others in the industry, to network, and to share ideas.

“Building those connections right from the start of their degrees is really useful for our students – and they get to have fun and meet interesting people too!”

Carwyn Edwards, founder of North Wales Tech said, “Holding our first North Wales Tech event at Glyndŵr University was really important for us.

“Connecting different groups within the tech sector and raising awareness of what is already going on in the region is what we are all about. Sharing knowledge and skills, especially between different disciplines and experience levels, is essential to grow the digital ecosystem in North Wales.

“It was wonderful to see such a mix of students and professionals getting to know each other. We look forward to future collaborations.”
