A team of volunteers will be exchanging their traditional festivities for an evening of sleeping rough, as they take part in a sponsored sleep out on Christmas Eve.

Organised by local group the ‘Wrexham Warehouse Project’ a team of 30 volunteers will take part in a Christmas Sleepout, spending from 7pm on Christmas Eve to 7am on Christmas Day sleeping rough.

The Wrexham Warehouse Project officially launched last year, following two years of hard work converting a derelict building into a ‘dedicated and friendly’ space for the people of Wrexham. The charity aims to ‘encourage and empower the young people of Wrexham by working with them to achieve their aspirations and gain positive aspirational experiences’.

The sleepout is part of the Wrexham Warehouse’s Life on The Street Project (LOTS) and will see the group sleep outside Wrexham Football Club for 12 hours.

Throughout the course of the evening those taking part will not use tents, with the aim being to make the event as realistic as possible to help raise understanding and awareness.

Taking part in the event are volunteers, members of LOTS, 24-year-old beauty queen Hannah Hunter and Joe Penlington; a soldier who bravely decided to have his leg amputated after surviving a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan.

Money raised from the event will help fund a ‘slow build’ project, which will eventually provide homeless youngsters with training in construction.

There is still time to take part in the sleep out with a £10 fee to sign up, which will go towards sponsorship.
