At around 8pm last night a delivery lorry crashed into a town centre shop damaging part of its signage.

The white Mercedes box van was believed to be finishing a delivery at Discount UK via a rear entrance off Egerton Street when the incident occurred.

The lorry reversed into the Britannia Building Society shop damaging the front area of the shop. One bollard close by, which appears to be positioned to stop this from happening, is also bent however we do not know if that is as a result of last nights crash.

One concerned onlooker told us he thought the incident likely occurred due to people parking on the small street, something that ought not happen due to the double yellow lines. The lack of space causing the driver to reverse on their blind side.

“The driver subsequently reversed into the sign as he could not see it, even when there was police on scene there were people trying to turn around and park blocking it even further.”

“There have been too many accidents on that street including two old ladies and a young lad getting knocked over, damage to vehicles parked within loading bays, service areas and those workers cars of local shops.”

Police were called to the scene, however the incident was passed to the owners of the building and the council. Cones and tape were later placed around the front of the shop for safety reasons.
